About
Classe IV (V above 21 m3/s, FFCK classification). The flagship Aude run: through the spectacular Pierre-Lys gorge between Axat and Quillan, the busiest advanced raft/kayak stretch in the eastern French Pyrenees. The FFCK formally classifies the gorge class IV up to 21 m3/s and class V beyond. Powerful, continuous limestone-gorge rapids; commercial rafting runs it daily in season so lines are well known, but at storm flows it becomes a serious undertaking. Take out at Quillan, where the town slalom stadium on the Aude hosts competitions and provides gated training water. Season: Release-fed most of the season; big water on spring melt and storms Gauge reference: FFCK threshold: <=21 m3/s = IV, above = V. Releases weekdays; check with Quillan tourist office the day before.
