About

A long, interesting kayaking section with striking scenery. The first half is on the Wilge and the second on the Olifants, with the confluence roughly in the middle. Expect continuous easy rapids and a few more serious drops that can be run at the paddler's discretion. It is doable in a day when levels are not too low, though a two-day trip does the section more justice. The first kilometres after the put-in are generally flat before the river enters a gorge-like section with beautiful cliffs dropping to the water. Down to the confluence is class 2–3, with plenty of channels and overhanging trees adding interest. Once on the Olifants, gradient increases slightly. A small waterfall can be run, though the line is not easy. Rapids become continuous at higher water. The whole run is very isolated with abundant birdlife and fine views of cliffs and lush vegetation — a sensitive environment not to be disturbed. Hippos may be encountered on the last section; they live in Loskop Dam but move upstream from time to time.
