About
Classe IV (IV+). The sporting head of the Ariège: put in at the first road bridge downstream of Mérens-les-Vals, take out in Ax-les-Thermes on the left bank. Class IV+ near the top with two notably good rapids, and a narrow passage after an old avalanche/snow barrage that needs attention, easing towards Ax. Granite boulder-garden character typical of the upper Ariège, roadside along the N20 for scouting. The Oriège tributary adds a class IV town run through Ax before class III rapids below the confluence. Season: May-June snowmelt Gauge reference: Snowmelt run - judge from the N20; Vigicrues 'Ariège à Foix' as a broad proxy.
