About

An interesting and increasingly popular Bushmans section. The first 15km features easy rapids, a few worth scouting, all kayak-runnable; K1-paddlers will have to portage some but not all. Alien vegetation is prevalent on this stretch. The next 5km passes through a largely unspoilt gorge within the Weenen Nature Reserve, including several class 4 rapids that can reach class 5 at high levels. Watch for bad holes at high water, particularly one at the base of a small fall that is sticky at most levels. Below the gorge the river flattens and passes farmland. A weir appears that is runnable at some levels; scout first. Further down, another weir has been built on top of a spectacular waterfall, marring its appearance. If continuing to Weenen, portage on the right, though it is a tough portage from here on; alternatively take out 200m upstream on the left.

Take-out

Take Buys Street out of Weenen, on the northern bank of the river. At the end of the road is a farm, with the road very close to the river. Riverwise it is 200m upstream of the big
