About

Classe I-II. Wilderness float through the roadless Gorges du Gardon: from Russan the river disappears into a garrigue-covered limestone canyon accessible only by boat for 11 km to Pont Saint-Nicolas, then continues to Collias (from where the tourist fleet paddles on to the Pont du Gard). Class I-II water — the difficulty is commitment, portages over gravel sieves in low water, and the Gardon's notorious flash floods, which can multiply the flow a thousandfold in hours. A Mediterranean gem when the level is right. Season: Spring (May–June ideal); often too low mid-summer upstream of Collias; extreme flash-flood ('gardonnade') risk after storms Gauge reference: Vigicrues 'Gardon à Russan' — never enter the gorge with storms forecast upstream (gardonnades)
