About
Arguably the finest paddling in the Eastern Cape, the Gqunube is strictly for experienced class 4 kayakers — the run is fast and demanding. Rapids are frequently technical and many should be scouted from the bank. Good surf waves appear at most levels. There are no weirs, but a 12m waterfall near the end requires a portage on river left; strainers are common from the waterfall down to the take-out, and a few others earlier on are easily avoided. The river is entirely rain-dependent and typically runs for a few days each month through summer. The lower, flat reach is heavily used by K1- and surf ski-paddlers for training.
