Ain — Haut Ain: Champagnole — Pont-du-Navoy
Ain · Jura (39)
Grade
II
Type
gorge
About
Classe II (III). Pleasant Jura valley run on the upper Ain below Champagnole, winding between wooded banks with gravel bars and class II rapids, plus the class III 'Jean Mathieu' rapid to inspect. Put in on river right just below Champagnole after a short carry. Upstream lie the spectacular but unrunnable Pertes de l'Ain gorge at Bourg-de-Sirod; downstream of Pont-du-Navoy the river continues as easy touring toward Châtillon and the Gorges de l'Ain reservoirs. Honest grading: this is a scenic sport-touring run, not sustained whitewater. Season: Spring snowmelt and rainy periods; often too low in summer (min ~6 m3/s) Gauge reference: Ain at Champagnole area; minimum around 6 m3/s for a clean run
