Umzimvubu River – Dikela to Port St. Johns · transkei
Grade
IV
Length
70km from put-in at low-level bridge
Duration
5 days for full section
About
Probably the best-known stretch in the Transkei, and regularly rafted. An alternative put-in is reached via a road through Mxhino until the track ends, with a similar walk down to the river — this put-in sits about 15km upstream of Dikela and adds a day to the trip. From either put-in, introductory class 2 and 3 rapids lead into larger action. Expect a new set of rapids needing scouting around almost every corner. To the next access point the rapids range from class 3 to 4. About 15km below Dikela, two rapids near the Mzintshana tributary require careful scouting, as does the Delicious White Monster just before the next access point. The next access point is reached via Majola, using a slow 35km 4×4 road to the riverbank. The second section continues the pattern — medium cruising stretches with class 3 and occasional class 4 rapids at almost every corner. Scout properly: a waterfall on the second afternoon must be portaged. The river then flattens as it approaches the estuary and take-out. Local cattle farmers inhabit the few flat grass areas, making large camping spots scarce. Expect continual visits from curious children and farmers. The trip combines striking scenery with close contact with rural Africa, culminating in paddling through 'The Gate' at Port St. Johns into the sea.
