About

Classe II-III. The Haut-Giffre classic under the cliffs of the Fer à Cheval cirque, a lively glacial class II-III used by all the Samoëns rafting outfits. The narrow Gorges des Tines between Sixt and Samoëns must be scouted — it is an infran/portage for most and there is another unrunnable drop upstream of Sixt. The Giffre moves huge amounts of gravel and wood: expect trees on every gravel bar, especially after floods. Cold, milky glacial water all summer. Season: April to late September; glacier/snowmelt fed, best May-July Gauge reference: Hub'Eau/eaufrance station Le Giffre à Taninges; visual check at Samoëns bridge
