About
Classe IV (IV+). The sporting top end of the Soule valley system: the Gave de Larrau becomes the Saison at the confluence with the Sainte-Engrâce stream above Licq. Sustained class IV-III bedrock and boulder rapids in a tight, wooded Basque gorge - eauxvives.org rates the sporting sections IV to III, easing after Athérey. Runs on winter/spring natural water, plus releases for the regional slalom or Haute-Soule gatherings. Check for wood; the valley is steep-sided and cold in season. Season: Winter and early spring natural flow; occasional dam releases (traditionally Easter events) Gauge reference: Winter/early spring rain-snowmelt; releases coincide with Haute-Soule club events (traditionally Easter).
