Fium'Orbo — Defile de l'Inzecca gorge (below Sampolo dam)
Fium'Orbo · Haute-Corse, Corse
Grade
VI
Type
gorge
About
Classe V-VI (X). The most notorious piece of whitewater in Corsica: between the Sampolo and Trevadine dams the Fium'Orbo slices through the sheer Defile de l'Inzecca, described in the Dawson guide as 'off the scale of even a revised grading system'. Normally dry because of the hydro scheme, and with water it is an extremely committing siphon-choked canyon with essentially no escape once in - inspection from the D344 rim is mandatory and most parties will conclude it is a look-only river. Included for completeness and as a warning; treat any full descent as expedition class VI. Season: Almost never - only when the Sampolo dam spills in big floods Gauge reference: Runs only on dam spill from the Barrage de Sampolo
