About
A short but enjoyable run with excellent scenery, including the spectacular Dante Falls, which has been run a handful of times by very experienced kayakers. After the start come several interesting rapids followed by a weir and, immediately below it, the waterfall — a broken drop of about 25m that most kayakers should portage on the left bank. Below this the deep gorge begins with pleasant class 2 to 3 rapids. The Elands joins the Crocodile about 1km below Montrose; paddlers must then work upstream to Montrose, navigating flat pools that hold hippos and portaging two small waterfalls. A very short alternative trip runs from the put-in bridge to the weir, with a 300m hike up a small track to the N4.
