Duration

About
A 25km stretch, graded 1 to 3, forming the first stage of the Gariep-Fish transfer scheme and therefore paddleable year-round (flow controlled by Fish River Tunnel release). No permits. Put-in at the canal outlet (31°26'43.6"S 25°38'58.7"E); take-out at the bridge (31°35'45.0"S 25°29'43.0"E). Do not put in on the canal itself — the canal-to-river transition is a serious hazard. Follow the road alongside the canal to its end and put in directly on the river. The river is fast and continuous but has no serious rapids. Numerous surfwaves, particularly on the upper section above the halfway bridge — paddlers focused on playing may prefer to run only the top half. Weirs are numerous on the full stretch; most are runnable but all must be scouted.
