About
Classe III (II-III at standard release). The upper Aude gorge: the narrowest defile of the high valley, a canyon over 30 m deep with walls at times only twenty metres apart, upstream of Axat. Class II-III rapids at normal release flows - a step easier than Pierre-Lys downstream - and the standard initiation raft/hydrospeed trip of the valley. Navigation depends on releases from the two power plants bracketing the gorge (frequent on weekdays, sometimes Saturday morning, rarely Sunday). The Saint-Georges weir has a canoe/raft pass built during EDF renovation works. Season: Release-fed: weekdays spring-summer; natural water on snowmelt/storms Gauge reference: Release-dependent - Quillan tourist office (04.68.20.07.78) after 17h the day before for release info.
