Maronne — Maronne : Barrage du Gour Noir → Tours de Merle
Maronne · Corrèze (19), Massif Central
Grade
III
Type
gorge
About
Classe III. A gem of the Xaintrie: 7 km of winding, very wild class III between the Gour Noir dam and the medieval towers of Merle, deep in a forested gorge with no road access in between. Of the Maronne's 85 km only about 30 remain navigable between the three EDF dams, and this is the pick — for experienced paddlers when spill or sustained rain gives it water. The take-out beneath the Tours de Merle castle ruins is one of the most atmospheric in the Massif Central. Season: Dam spill/high water periods (winter–spring) — most of the Maronne's flow is captured by the Enchanet–Gour Noir–Hautefage dam chain Gauge reference: Vigicrues 'Maronne à Argentat [Basteyroux]' (P159 2510) as a proxy; check EDF spill at Gour Noir
