About
Classe II (III). Wide, wild braided descent of the upper Champsaur on a pebble/small-rock bed — class II with III moments, easier than the Drac below Saint-Bonnet and a great intro to the valley. The serious hazard is wood: log jams form in the braids and along banks after every flood and can be deadly traps, especially in the first two thirds (to Pont des Chabottes km 5.2 and Pont Blanc km 8.5). Also the venue of regional downriver races at Saint-Bonnet. Season: Snowmelt May-June; needs at least ~1.20 m at the Pont des Chabottes gauge to avoid scraping the upper part Gauge reference: Échelle Pont des Chabottes (min ~1.20 m); Hub'Eau station Le Drac aux Chabottes
