About
90km, 5-7 days, grade 2-3. Flow controlled by Vanderkloof and Bloemhof Dams. Gentle continuous gradient. Many channels and islands, with easy but long rapids that cannot be scouted — must be run blind. Main obstacle: Khum-Khum Falls ~60km below the put-in. Small waterfall on river left fed by smaller channels from the right. Runnable at certain levels, usually not. Stay right as you approach and portage on the right bank. At high water the gorge below fills up and the fall becomes barely noticeable. Witbank or a farm 20km further can be used as halfway access. In the Witbank area the river has many channels — keep to the left bank to avoid missing the take-out.
