About
Classe II (II+). THE French canoe-touring classic: 32 km through the limestone canyon of the Gorges de l'Ardèche nature reserve, passing under the Pont d'Arc. A long chain of read-and-run class II rapids — Charlemagne (the most famous), Dent Noire, la Pastière, Toupine de Gournier — separated by long pools. Honest grade is II: busy, hot and easy in summer, but pushy and cold in spring flood. Full day (6–7 h) or two days with bivouac at Gaud or Gournier. Season: March–October; navigable year-round, summer levels kept up for the rental fleet; bivouac (Gaud/Gournier) mandatory for overnights in the nature reserve Gauge reference: Vigicrues 'Ardèche à Vallon-Pont-d'Arc'; navigation bylaws close the gorge above flood thresholds
