About

A 44km technical pool-drop section (some continuous) along the border between KwaZulu-Natal and Transkei, running the last 40km of the Umtamvuna to the sea through what is arguably South Africa's most stunning gorge — big walls draped in thick tropical vegetation, largely unspoilt and extremely remote. Once inside, walking out is virtually impossible. Duration 8–10 hours depending on level; a two-day trip is preferred. Pay permit at take-out. Grade mostly 3 to 4, some bordering on 5. Put-in: turn off the Port Edward–Izingolweni road to the Umtamvuna Water Purification Plant (do not enter), continue down to the river for roughly 3.5km, turn left onto a track where powerlines cross the road, then walk or use a 4×4 for the last 1km. Take-out: Old Pont Caravan Park just outside Port Edward on the road to Izingolweni. Rapids are technical over rough, unfriendly rock with few play spots — a short creekboat is preferable to a playboat, which will lose its edges. Pools between rapids are mostly short, producing very continuous sections; once the gradient truly drops, the action is intense. Rapids scout reasonably from the bank, but care is needed on the rocks. There are too many rapids to describe individually; if the line isn't visible from the top, scout. Pour-overs, undercuts, siphons and full-stop rocks must be avoided, and several rapids compel portages for most paddlers. Prefer two days unless familiar with the section or the water is quite high; a two-day trip also allows time for filming the rapids and avoids paddling after dark. To run it in a day, launch at sunrise — staying at the Old Pont Caravan Park the night before helps. The final 3km is on the river lagoon, where an incoming tide and onshore wind can make progress tough. Water bones up at low levels, disappearing between rocks rather than channelling, so first attempts are best at medium water. The catchment is small, but good levels follow rain south of Harding. For most of the section the river borders the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve; contact Reserve officials as a courtesy before launching. Rescue from the gorge would be extremely difficult.
