About
Classe II-III (IV- at high water). The sportiest regularly-paddled reach of the Loue, in a narrow, heavily vegetated gorge below the famous Source de la Loue. Natural class II-III rapids plus a series of five old weirs including the well-known Lods dams, several of which are run or portaged depending on level. Authorised embark/disembark points only (Mouthier RD at the Syratu confluence, Lods RG above the old railway bridge, Vuillafans upstream of the Bersaillin weir): a prefectural decree regulates all navigation between Mouthier and Quingey. Below Vuillafans the river eases to a popular class I-II tourist float via Ornans. Season: Spring and after sustained rain; karst-fed so levels swing fast (5 to 100 m3/s at Vuillafans) Gauge reference: Vuillafans gauge: navigation forbidden below 4-5 m3/s (prefectural rule); ~10 m3/s is a good level, >15 m3/s needed in summer per Swiss club topos
