Guisane · Hautes-Alpes (05), Alpes du Sud
Grade
IV
Type
gorge
About
Classe II-III upper, III-IV lower (IV Chantemerle-Briançon). Fast, cold, continuous alpine creek down the Serre Chevalier valley into Briançon. The upper half (Monêtier to Chantemerle) is class II-III; below Chantemerle the gradient kicks and the run alternates class 3 and 4 rapids to the Durance confluence. Hazards are typical Briançonnais fare: low footbridges, occasional weirs and wood after storms; eddies are small and the current rarely lets up. Take out in Briançon before the Durance gorge. Season: May-July snowmelt; afternoon melt peak
