Grade

Type
gorge
About
Classe IV (IV+/V in high water). Steep, narrow and committing gorge run alongside the D921 between Luz-Saint-Sauveur and Pierrefitte, the hardest of the Gave de Pau classics. Continuous class III-IV boulder rapids that stack up seriously in flood, when local raft companies run it as an expert trip. Road access allows scouting of most cruxes but eddies are small and the water is cold and pushy in melt. In crue it becomes a full-on IV+/V flush documented by local expert crews (PEK). Season: April-July snowmelt; autumn rain spates Gauge reference: Judge from the road on the drive up; Vigicrues 'Gave de Pau à Lourdes' as a proxy. Best at moderate snowmelt levels.
